Reliable advice about SSDI and SSI claims in Philadelphia and the Main Line
While the SSDI and SSI benefits programs both serve the needs of people who are disabled from working, the eligibility criteria and payments are different. We can work with you to see which program will be best for you.
In general, SSDI is available for people with a substantial history of employment. Most people will need to have worked fulltime for about half of the preceding 10 years. You also need to have worked within the last two years. Once you've established your eligibility through your work history, you need to show that a medical impairment disables you from working for at least one year.
SSI is available for people who lack the recent work history necessary to qualify them for Social Security disability insurance benefits. Some SSI recipients have never worked a steady job for any of a number of reasons. Instead of demonstrating a record of recent employment, SSI applicants need to show that their assets and income fall below a certain level. Then they need to prove a period of disability through medical records.
